One of the questions we hear fairly regularly — and one that deserves a really thorough answer — is whether laser tattoo removal works the same way for everyone, regardless of skin tone. The short answer is yes, it can work for all skin types. But there are some important differences in how treatment is approached, and the technology used matters enormously.

How Laser Tattoo Removal Works

Laser tattoo removal works by targeting the pigment (colour) in the tattoo ink with concentrated light energy. The laser shatters the ink particles into tiny fragments that your immune system then clears away over the following weeks.

Specifically, the laser’s energy causes a rapid pressure wave inside the ink particle — a process called photoacoustic fragmentation — breaking large clumps of pigment into pieces small enough for your body’s macrophages (a type of immune cell) to engulf and carry off through the lymphatic system. This is why results build gradually over multiple sessions rather than happening all at once, and why adequate healing time between treatments matters just as much as the laser settings themselves.

The challenge with darker skin tones is that the melanin (natural pigment) in the skin can also absorb laser energy, not just the tattoo ink. This creates a risk of hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin) or hyperpigmentation (darkening) if the laser isn’t calibrated carefully, or if the wrong wavelength is used. Melanin absorbs strongly across a broad range of wavelengths, so in deeper skin tones there’s more competition for the laser’s energy — which is precisely why wavelength selection and pulse duration become so important.

The Fitzpatrick Scale

Practitioners use a tool called the Fitzpatrick scale to classify skin types from I (very fair, always burns) to VI (deeply pigmented, never burns). Skin types I to III are generally the most straightforward to treat. Skin types IV to VI require more careful settings, longer intervals between sessions, and ideally, a laser specifically suited to treating pigmented skin.

Why the PicoWay Makes a Difference

Not all lasers are created equal when it comes to treating darker skin tones. At Rethink, we use the PicoWay laser — a picosecond technology that delivers energy in ultra-short pulses (trillionths of a second). This means less heat is generated in the skin compared to older nanosecond lasers, which reduces the risk of pigmentation changes.

The PicoWay also offers multiple wavelengths, allowing us to select the most appropriate setting for your skin type and ink colour combination. This flexibility is key to treating a wider range of clients safely and effectively.

Trained to Treat Every Skin Tone

Equipment is only half the equation — the person operating it matters just as much. Michelle trained at the Rocky Mountain Laser College in Colorado in the USA, where clinical training deliberately included work with skin types V and VI. That grounding in treating deeply pigmented skin, rather than a one-size-fits-all curriculum, shapes how every client at Rethink is assessed and treated, regardless of their skin tone.

With more than 16 years of hands-on experience since founding Rethink Laser in 2010, Michelle has treated a genuinely diverse client base on the Gold Coast — and that experience is what allows for the kind of judgement calls that don’t come from a settings chart alone: knowing when to pull back on fluence, when a longer gap between sessions is the safer call, and how a particular client’s skin is likely to respond before it happens.

What to Expect If You Have a Darker Skin Tone

If your skin tone is deeper, here’s what a responsible approach looks like: a thorough consultation and skin assessment before any treatment, conservative laser settings to start, longer spacing between sessions to allow for full healing, close monitoring of the skin’s response, and honest communication about realistic outcomes.

That longer spacing isn’t just caution for its own sake — it gives the epidermis time to fully turn over and lets any transient pigment changes settle before the next session, rather than compounding on top of skin that hasn’t finished healing. It’s a slower path, but it’s the one that protects your skin long-term.

You may need more sessions than someone with a lighter skin tone, and patience is especially important. But the results can absolutely be achieved safely in skilled hands with the right equipment.

A Note on Choosing Your Clinic

If you have a medium to deeper skin tone and you’re exploring tattoo removal, please do your research on the clinic you choose. Ask specifically what laser they use, whether the operator has experience treating your skin type, and whether they’ll do a patch test first. These questions matter.

At Rethink, we’ve been treating a diverse range of clients on the Gold Coast since 2010. We take skin safety seriously and tailor every treatment to the individual — not a one-size-fits-all approach.
