What I Wish Every Client Knew Before Starting Laser Tattoo Removal
So you’ve decided you’re done with that tattoo. Maybe it’s a name, an impulsive design from your early twenties, or a piece of art that just doesn’t feel like you anymore. Whatever the reason, you’ve done a bit of Googling, you’re interested in laser removal — and now you want the real story.
After 16+ years of helping clients at Rethink Laser Tattoo Removal in Robina, I’ve heard the same surprises come up again and again. Here’s what I wish more people knew before they started.
It Takes Longer Than You Think
This is the big one. Tattoo removal isn’t a one-and-done treatment. Most tattoos need anywhere from 6 to 12 sessions (sometimes more), spaced 8–16 weeks apart. That means the full process can take 1 to 3 years.
That’s not a flaw in the process — it’s biology. Your immune system does the actual heavy lifting between sessions, breaking down the shattered ink particles and flushing them out. Rushing it doesn’t work, and it can damage your skin.
The Number of Sessions Depends on a Lot of Factors
Not all tattoos are created equal, and not all skin is the same. Things that affect how many sessions you’ll need include:
- The age of the tattoo (older is often easier)
- The colours used (black is the most responsive; green and yellow are stubborn)
- The depth of the ink
- Your skin tone
- Your overall health and immune function
A good clinic will give you an honest estimate at your consultation — not a number designed to get you in the door.

It’s Uncomfortable, But Very Manageable
People often describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin, repeatedly. Some areas hurt more than others — bony spots like ribs, feet and hands tend to be more sensitive. But sessions are short, and we use a Zimmer Chiller (a cold air device) and ice packs to help manage discomfort throughout. You’re welcome to use a numbing cream — just make sure it’s applied before you arrive at the clinic.
Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how quick it is. A small tattoo might take just a few minutes per session.
Your Aftercare Matters More Than You Might Think
What you do between sessions has a real impact on your results. Keeping the area out of the sun, staying well hydrated, not smoking, and letting the skin heal properly all contribute to faster, cleaner results. Treat your body like the healing machine it is.
Not All Lasers Are Equal
Candela PicoWay laser — keep this WordPress shortcode intact when pasting into the block editor.
This one matters a lot. We use the PicoWay laser — a picosecond technology that delivers energy in ultra-short pulses, shattering ink particles more effectively and with less heat than older Q-switched lasers. The technology you’re treated with affects both your results and your safety.
When comparing clinics, always ask what laser they use and what their operator’s qualifications are. In Queensland, laser operators are required to hold a radiation licence — ask to see it.
Results Are Real — But Realistic
Complete removal is absolutely achievable for many tattoos, especially older, single-colour pieces on lighter skin tones. For others, significant fading (enough for a cover-up) might be the realistic goal. A good practitioner will be honest with you about what’s achievable for your specific tattoo.
The before-and-after results we see at Rethink are genuinely rewarding — clients who’ve carried a tattoo they’ve hated for years, finally free of it. That never gets old.
