Laser tattoo removal has come a long way — today’s treatments are more effective, faster, and safer than ever. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves heading into your first session. To get the best possible results (and avoid wasting time or money), there are a few important things to avoid before — and during — your treatment journey.

1. Don’t Expose Your Tattoo to the Sun

This is the single most important rule: keep your tattoo out of the sun, ideally for the entire duration of your treatment course.

UV exposure triggers your skin to produce more melanin — the pigment responsible for tanning. Increased melanin in the treatment area interferes with how the laser targets ink, reducing its effectiveness and increasing the risk of side effects. Protecting your skin from sunlight and UV radiation ensures it’s in the best possible condition to respond to treatment.

Bottom line: Sun-kissed skin and laser tattoo removal don’t mix. Cover up, or use a high-SPF sunscreen on the area.

2. Don’t Use Fake Tan or Self-Tanning Products

Spray tans and self-tanning lotions may seem harmless, but they can significantly impact your results. Artificially darkened skin affects how the laser interacts with your skin, potentially requiring more sessions than would otherwise be necessary.

Some tanning products also contain ingredients that can react adversely with laser energy, causing unwanted pigmentation changes. Save yourself the extra appointments — and the extra cost — by skipping the fake tan while you’re undergoing treatment.

3. Don’t Come Straight from the Tattoo Studio

Got a tattoo you already regret? We get it — but don’t rush straight in. Laser treatment on freshly tattooed skin can lead to scarring and poor ink clearance.

Here’s why: a new tattoo is essentially an open wound. The ink is still settling into the dermis, and your immune system is actively working to heal the area. Laser energy introduced too early disrupts this process.

We recommend waiting a minimum of 8 weeks — and ideally 3 months — before beginning laser tattoo removal. This gives the ink time to fully settle and your skin time to heal, which ultimately leads to better removal outcomes.

4. Don’t Forget to Disclose Your Medications

Certain medications can interact with laser treatment, affecting both your safety and your results. Before your session, always let your clinician know about any prescription medications, supplements, or topical products you’re using.

This allows us to assess whether it’s safe to proceed, or whether adjustments need to be made to your treatment plan.

5. Don’t Try DIY or Non-Laser Removal Methods

It can be tempting to try to speed things along with other removal methods — but most alternatives to professional laser treatment carry serious risks.

  • Dermabrasion and salabrasion — physically abrasive methods that can cause permanent scarring
  • Acid treatments — harsh chemicals that damage skin without effectively removing ink
  • Tattoo removal creams — despite bold marketing claims, these cannot penetrate the deep dermal layers where tattoo ink lives. At best, they may cause slight fading; at worst, they can irritate or damage your skin. They are not a substitute for professional treatment.

There are no shortcuts when it comes to safe, effective tattoo removal. Trust the process.
