How to Prepare for Laser Tattoo Removal: Your Complete Guide
So you’ve decided it’s time to say goodbye to that tattoo — great decision! Whether it’s a name that no longer belongs on your body or a design you’ve simply outgrown, laser tattoo removal is the most effective way to move forward. But getting the best results isn’t just about turning up on the day. A little preparation goes a long way.
Here’s everything you need to know before your first session at Rethink Laser Tattoo Removal on the Gold Coast.
Choose the Right Clinic and the Right Laser
Not all laser tattoo removal clinics are created equal, and the laser being used makes an enormous difference to your results. At Rethink, we use the PicoWay laser — one of the most advanced tattoo removal systems available. PicoWay delivers ultra-short picosecond pulses that shatter ink particles more effectively and with less heat than older nanosecond lasers, meaning better results with a reduced risk of scarring or skin damage.
Be cautious of clinics offering cheap treatments with IPL or non-specialised equipment. Using the wrong laser can lead to blistering, scarring, and permanent pigmentation changes — and may not fully remove the tattoo at all.

Stay Out of the Sun (Yes, Even the Gold Coast Sun)
We know this one’s tough when you live in one of Australia’s sunniest spots, but sun exposure before and after treatment is one of the most important things to manage. Sunburnt or heavily tanned skin is far more reactive to laser treatment and significantly increases the risk of adverse effects.
The rule: Keep the treatment area out of the sun for at least four weeks before each session and four weeks after. If you must be outdoors, cover the area completely — sunscreen alone isn’t sufficient protection during your removal journey.
Know What to Expect (and Be Patient)
Laser tattoo removal is a process, not a one-and-done treatment. Most people require a minimum of 5-12 sessions, spaced several weeks apart to allow the skin to heal and the body to flush out the broken-down ink.
The number of sessions you’ll need depends on several factors:
- Ink colours — black and dark blue respond fastest; greens, yellows, and whites can be more stubborn
- Ink quality and depth — professional tattoos typically require more sessions than amateur ones
- Tattoo location — areas with better circulation fade faster
- Your skin type — this affects how aggressively we can treat and how quickly you heal
The best way to get a realistic estimate is to book a consultation. We can assess your tattoo and give you a personalised treatment plan.
Eat Well and Hydrate Before Your Appointment
Don’t arrive on an empty stomach. Eat a proper meal and drink plenty of water before your session. While treatments are typically quick — usually under 20 minutes depending on the size of the tattoo — having food in your system helps stabilise your blood sugar and reduces the chance of feeling lightheaded or faint, particularly for first-timers.
Ask About Numbing Options
Laser tattoo removal is often described as feeling similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin — uncomfortable but very manageable. That said, everyone’s pain threshold is different, and there are options to take the edge off.
At Rethink, we can discuss cooling and numbing options with you prior to treatment. You can also organise a topical numbing cream through a local compounding chemist. If you’d like advice on this, get in touch with us here and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Skip the Lotions, Perfumes, and Cosmetics
On the day of your appointment, come in with clean, product-free skin over the treatment area. Avoid applying:
- Moisturisers or body lotions
- Perfume or body spray
- Fake tan or bronzer
- Alcohol-based products of any kind
These can interfere with the laser and cause irritation, burns, or uneven results. If you’re using a numbing cream, that’s perfectly fine — just let us know when you arrive. The same applies after treatment: keep the area clean and product-free until it has fully healed.
Wear Loose, Comfortable Clothing
If your tattoo is in an area normally covered by clothing, wear something loose and breathable on the day. The skin can swell slightly after treatment — nothing alarming, and it typically settles within an hour or two — but tight waistbands, rough denim, or fitted tops over the treated area will be uncomfortable. Continue wearing loose clothing over the area for a few days post-treatment to let the skin breathe and heal properly.
Avoid Ibuprofen and Aspirin
Don’t take ibuprofen (Nurofen) or aspirin before your appointment. Both are blood thinners and can cause increased bruising around the treated area. If you need a painkiller beforehand, paracetamol (Panadol) is a safe alternative.
